Transactional Analysis

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a theory of personality which can be used for personal growth. TA practitioners believe that:

  • everyone has value;
  • people make decisions about themselves, other people and the world; and
  • these decisions can be changed so that we can learn to alter unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.

TA therapy is a collaborative process and we will work together to identify what is happening for you now. We will identify the strengths you have already and agree what you would like to change. Therapy can be challenging at times and you will need to take an active role both in therapy sessions and in your life, to make the decisions and changes that will allow you reach your goals, to be more content in yourself and your relationships with others.

TA uses theories of child development to help us to work out why you have developed patterns of thinking and feeling and how these patterns have influenced your behaviour and the way you relate to other people. Children develop strategies to protect themselves and we can carry these strategies into adult life without realising that we have new skills and resources and could do things differently now that we are grown up.

 You do not have to learn the TA theories to benefit from therapy, they are tools that we use to help us understand what is happening. I will share theories with you if you are interested and if this will help you to move forwards in your life.
